Biography

Sir Anthony Saint Leger of Ulcombe and Leeds, Kent[1][2]

Anthony St Leger, eldest son of Sir Warham St Leger and his wife Ursula Neville,[3] daughter of George Neville, Baron Bergavenny,[4] and his 3rd wife Mary Stafford,[1] was born about 1551 in Ulcombe, Kent, England. (No source has yet been found for Anthony's date of birth, the year 1551 is an estimate based on his parent's marriage in 1749.)

Anthony married Mary Scott, daughter of Sir Thomas Scott of Scott's Hall, Sheriff of Kent (1576-7), and Elizabeth Baker, on 13 May 1578 in St Mary's Church at Smeeth, Kent.[5][1] According to Douglas Richardson they had four sons and one daughter,[1] but only two of their children are mentioned by name:

  1. Warham St Leger, Knt., m. Mary Hayward[1][6][7], d. 1630[8]
  2. Anthony St Leger, b. 1591[9]; d. 1626[10]

Anthony St Leger was made a knight 28 May 1593 by William FitzWilliam, lord deputy of Ireland.[11][12]

Sir Anthony St. Leger died in 1602 and was buried on 17 June of that year in All Saints Church at Ulcombe, Kent.[13] His widow, Mary, married (2nd) Sir Alexander Culpeper of Wigsell, Sussex on 7 December 1603.[14][15]

Research Notes

Richardson dates Anthony's death as occurring in 1603, but this theory is superseded by the discovery of his burial record at Ulcombe.

St Leger-277 and St Leger-22 appear to represent the same person because: same parents and wife (merges proposed)

If there are no objections, as part of the process of redoing/adding sources to this profile I will be deleting Marlyn Lewis's website as a source. This is because the Richardson works which he relies on are cited in this profile directly, and the 'unknown group worksheets' which he cites as evidence of Anthony St Leger's date of death have already been disproven here by a primary source, i.e., Anthony's burial record. If anyone is uncomfortable with me deleting the Lewis webpage, please either contact me directly or leave a message here. Thanks, Jen

I removed Project Protection temporarily so a WikiTree member could add a son. Looking further at the profile, I do not believe it meets current criteria for Project Protection. So, unless anyone sees a good reason for protection, I do not propose to reinstate Project Protection.

Actually....there are so many Anthony and Warham St Legers (multiple in each generation for about four generations) that it has become really challenging to sort them out. Every pedigree chart gives conflicting information, and quite a few otherwise credible sources have confused some of them. It is beginning to give me a headache trying to sort out this profile! I think project protection is probably a good idea so this family doesn't get more muddled up. Our wiki profile looks pretty good at the moment but with a few unsourced additions it could get messy.

Thanks, Jen. You are right. I will reinstate Protection.

I am going to be looking for additional sources and expanding the biography on this profile on behalf of the Magna Carta Project. If anyone has come across additional references that should be added, please contact me. Thanks!
